Burning Coal, Burning Cash

Union of Concerned Scientists: Burning Coal, Burning Cash

This is a terrific report focusing on the economic liabilities created by our dependence upon coal imported almost entirely from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.   The report is national in scope, but includes a state-by-state analysis – Kansas is on page 31.

One of the stand-out facts:  In 2008, Kansans spent $518 million just on imported coal – a sum of money larger than the mid-year state budget gap ($510 million) that required a sales tax increase to close.
